Dr.
Marc L. Levitan is
Director of the LSU Hurricane Center, and Associate Professor of Civil and
Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University.
Dr. Levitan has 20 years experience in wind and hurricane hazard research and
education. He has worked with many Louisiana communities and agencies to
identify buildings to use as hurricane shelters and refuges of last resort. His
primary research areas include wind effects on low-rise buildings and
industrial/petrochemical facilities, wind hazard mitigation, hurricane shelter
assessment and design, and hurricane evacuations. Prior to joining LSU, Dr.
Levitan worked with the Institute for Disaster Research at Texas Tech University
and served five years as Managing Director of the Wind Engineering Research
Field Laboratory. His academic pursuits are in structural engineering,
engineering for natural hazards. and the interface between engineering and
emergency management. He has played a leading role in the creation of the
interdisciplinary Disaster Science and Management academic program at LSU, and
currently chairs the LEPA Scholarship Committee.
